Scratchingpost

To pass the time until Eliza and Sandy was going to move home to us, we built this scratchingpost.

By experience we know that it is important that the scratchingpost isn't to short, cats like to stretch out when they are scratching. That is why we made the scratchingpost 1,2 meters tall and 60 cm wide. Use as sturdy boards as possible. The bottom and the top of the scratchingpost has a square of masonite nailed to it. Before you start covering the boards, make sure that the construction is stable.

Cover three of the "legs" with carpet, the fourth we wrapped in sisal rope. The legs in our scratchingpost is 20 cm in circumference, it took 25 m of rope to cover one of them. Start by nailing the rope to the inside of the leg at the bottom. Wrap it tightly around the board. When you get to the middle, slip the rope past the supporting beam on the inside. Continue with the rest of the leg and nail the rope on the inside of the top. To attach the rope to the middle section, we used 1 meter of the rope. Zigzag the rope on the outside, attaching every turn with a nail.

Pad the supporting beams in the middle with foam rubber. Cut a piece of cloth in the shape seen above. Make it larger than the opening, it is supposed to hang down a bit. Choose a sturdy fabric. Fold it around the supporting beams and nail the fabric to the inside of the beams. Cut another piece of fabric in the same shape, this time use some kind of cozy fabric. Sew on straps. Then you can fold it over the edges of the middle section and tie it put there(the idea is to be able to take it of an wash is if needed).

In the bottom of the scratchingpost the is a box. I made a cushion to put there.

Good luck!!

Here is another version of the scratchingpost. The webmaster of the swedish Ragdollclub, Lotta Lindgren, chose to paint the scratchingpost instead of covering it in carpet. In this picture you can find  S*Stenstagårdens Edward at the top, he is a handsome bicolor Ragdoll.
